Friday Beer O'clock Selections

Allagash Black, Belgian Style Stout - Friday Beer O'Clock Selection 2-4-2011

This week's Beer O'Clock Selection is Allagash Black, Belgian Style Stout brewed by another New England brewery located in Maine.

ABV: 7.50%

Appearance: Poured into a short wide mouth glass with a deep dark "black" forming thick dense head with blanketed lacing. Super dark color makes it impossible to see into the glass, even when held up to light.

Aroma: There is definately the expected roasted malts, Chocolate, Toffee and Coffee aromas as well as Molasses and I'm even getting an unexpected but pleasant apple scent on top.

Taste: Surprising sweetness right up front and I'm getting a fruitiness. There's also a definate toasted malt and chocolate with toffee in here across the middle with a slight bitterness on the back. The finish is delicious and lingers with a roasted bittersweet chocolate.

Feel: Good full body with some weight behind it. Carbonation is higher than expected but not out of bounds. The finish is a bit dry and a little sticky, leaving a film in the back of the mouth.

Drinkability: Very good and easy to drink overall. Good flavor and all around character. Seems a nearly perfect brew for cool/cold night by the fire.

Conclusion: I recommend this one. If you like stouts or chocolates with a twist, give this a try.
