Friday Beer O'clock Selections

Harpoon Leviathan Imperial Red - Friday Beer O'Clock Selection for 3-26-10

Harpoonimperialred

This week's Friday Beer O'Clock Selection is Harpoon Leviathan Imperial Red.

From the bottle:
This deep amber ale has an intense hop flavor balanced by complex malt character. The yeast's fruity esters blend perfectly with the citrus hop aroma.

Appearance:
This has a nice brown amber color that poured with a full head having pretty good retention and lacing. Turbidity is clear.

Aroma:
Aromas are impressive and inviting. A strong hoppy citrus balanced with a sweet caramel scent. It smells delicious.

Feel:
It's a medium bodied ale with a bite of carbonation.

Taste:
This is where is all goes down hill for me. Initial mouth full is not bad and picking up floral and citrus flavors (which should balance nicely with the bitterness). But once it hits the back of the mouth, the bitter citrus becomes a bit overpowering. The finish is also very bitter and lingers.

Overall:
I was sold on this one up to the taste. And to be honest, was quite dissapointed considering all the charasteristics leading up to the tasting. Maybe it's an acquired taste, but for now, Sorry Harpoon, I'll pass on this one.
